The bathhouse founder, Sam Fordyce, was given six months to live in 1872 due to a Civil War injury. Following this sentence, he found himself healed after visiting the therapeutic water baths in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This inspired him to invest in the bustling spa town, and he constructed the lavish, extravagant Fordyce Bathhouse. It was closed down in 1962.
